First released in 2011, DC Universe Online is a free-to-play MMO based on the DC Comics canon. Players can form teams of their favorite heroes and villains, then hit various missions and shoot down powerful enemies. Daybreak Games has announced that DC Universe Online will enter the Switch on August 6. When DCUO is released in Switch this summer, players will be able to achieve their hero or evil fantasy.
DC Universe Online will be a free-to-play game, much as it is everywhere else. All of the same content from the other versions of DC Universe Online will be making the journey over to Switch, which is great if you'd rather experience the game on the go as opposed to on a home console. But if you've invested a significant amount of time into DCUO on a PS4 or Xbox One, that progress won't be following you to Switch. You'll have to start from scratch, which may be a deal breaker for some.
Unfortunately, accounts and characters from other platforms cannot be transferred to the Switch version of the game. Why? Because it connects only to Nintendo accounts. In fact, it runs on its own server separate from other platforms as well, however, cross-play could come in the future, according to Daybreak Games.
The Switch version of DC Universe Online touts "over 300 DC characters across over 30 content episodes and over 100 free game updates," which makes sense considering the MMO has been in operation for eight years now.
We actually got to check out DC Universe Online for Switch last month and thought it made the transition to the handheld platform pretty well. While it doesn’t drastically update the game based on what we’ve seen, the Switch version should be a more than apt location to play the game upon if that’s something you’re looking for.
DC Universe Online creative director SJ Mueller said in a press release that the development team has always wanted to bring DCUO to Nintendo's handheld computer.
"Bringing such a large-scale online game to the Nintendo Switch has come true," Mueller said. “Once the Nintendo Switch is released, the development team can’t help wondering if...? Long story short, we’re happy that players can experience the DC experience anytime, anywhere.”
Given the size of the game, the developer's work has been completed because they are suitable for Nintendo's portable hardware.
